Violet Evergarden episode 2 is here, and with it comes a fair amount of controversy. Going into this season there was a massive amount of hype around this series, with many even pre-emptively naming it the anime of the season.
This has left a huge divide in the anime community between people who are in love with the series, and others who claim it has not lived up to the hype. As somebody who falls somewhere in between these two groups, I would like to further discuss the current state of the series.
The biggest problem many seem to have with this series is Violet's character herself. Supporters of the series empathize with her upbringing, while others write it off as a justification for a bland character. A child soldier growing into a cold teen is nothing new in the anime industry, but Violet still has a fair amount of room to grow. This is a slow-paced series that revolves around the emotional growth of a young girl, if you expect mind-blowing revelations every week, this is just a bad fit for you.
Violet begins her training with the three other dolls (Cattleya, Erica, and Iris) stationed under Hodgins. From the very beginning it is clear Iris does not respect Violet for assuming a job she had just begun. Erica is a bit more reserved, yet does not grow to respect Violet until she hears her motives behind becoming a doll later on. Upon hearing Violet’s hope to understand love, Erica is reminded of the reason she began working as a doll, and their friendship was formed. Following some harsh unempathetic remarks Violet is scolded by the other girls, but does not understand what she had done wrong.
The whole point of this episode was the emphasize Violet's lack of understanding others, as well as the growing pain of adapting to a new world. Hodgins also managed to get Violet her emerald brooch back, only after blowing through all his profits for the month. I am interested to see what type of relationship he had with Gilbert, to put so much effort into looking after Violet in his stead. After this episode it is clear Violet still has a great deal to learn about the people around her, but with Hodgins and Erica by her side at least she has some people to lean on.
