In this week, we get a Zorome focused episode. I didn’t quite enjoy this episode as much as the last one, which was really epic. However, there was a lot of world building and clarifications on the purpose of adults in this world. Zorome had a lot of screen time in which he had a lot of development.
This week’s episode starts with a snippet of Zorome’s dream. After the intro, the show jumps right into battle. Our characters are again fighting a klaxosaur. Ichigo orders Hiro and Zero Two to deliver the final blow. However, Zorome and Miku are jumping in and defeat the monster. As Zorome puts it: “It’s our time to shine!” Typically for the two reckless characters, they end up covered by the blood of the klaxosaur. The APE council are impressed by the capabilities of Squad 13. During this discussion, we learn about the final conflict of this series. Squad 13 will have to escort Zero Two into the Great Crevasse. Furthermore, we learn, that Zero Two has to go to “maintenance”. This is probably a series of tests, where she gets her klaxosaur half reorganized or whatever. Nevertheless, the APE council decides to give a medal to the Squad 13 to keep their motivation high.
After the battle, Miku and Zorome are fighting, like always. Zero Two seems to be preoccupied of her own, by a matter we don’t know. Hiro notices and asks her about it. But she doges the question. Nana explains to the kids, that they are allowed to go into the city. Of course, Zorome is exploding of joy. He wanted to visit the city and the adults since he was a little kid. Zero Two on the other hand doesn’t seems to be happy about it. Nana, will arrange for her to undergo test while the kids are visiting the city. The pink haired girl obviously hates these tests. Back to the dorm, the kids are putting on their formal uniform. Zorome takes meticulous care to put on his uniform perfectly. Passing through the entrance of the city is a really big deal for Zorome. We learn, that Squad 13 are the first children ever to be welcomed in the city. Furthermore, we learn, that Zero Two belonged to the Nine. However, ecause of a reason still unknown she left the group. After the ceremony, the kids decide to walk the way back. During the walk, we see that the confession by Goro still preoccupies Ichigo. Typically for the brash kid, Zorome runs off on his own to explore the city. Trying to find his way back, Zorome falls down and is lightly injured. He is taken care of by an adult from the city. The elderly woman reveals her face, which was hidden underneath the unusual hat. During the discussion between Zorome and the old lady we learn, that they are not really caring for partners. They only live in a pair because they are following old costoms. As we see the partner of the old lady, he lies inside a big box, where he is getting his daily dose of happiness.
It appears, that the adults have a messed-up way of life. We learn why Zero Two sees the city as a lifeless place. The old lady suddenly feels week and goes back to the living room. There, she explains that she isn’t used to speak so much. Zorome asks her if she doesn’t talk to her partner. She answers, that she doesn’t even remember how his voice sounds like. Zorome explains, that he is forced to hear the loud voice of his partner all the time. The old lady suggests, that he should change his partner. Zorome asks her if she could be his friend. However, she responds: “That is absolutely out of question.” Zorome is taken back to the Dorm, where Miku forces him to clean the baths for a week. We shortly see, that Zero Two is growing (or already had) some huge teeth.
- The Adults have a messed-up way of live. They don’t talk to their partners, they don’t have names and they are very week.
- Zorome loves Miku. During the discussion with the old lady Zorome realizes his feelings for Miku.
- The adults are calling the kids, pitiful.
This episode was not my favourite episode of this series so far. However, I am amazed how much world building we got. The endgame of this series has already been mentioned. I loved how Zorome got some great characterisation. I am glad that he is so well developed. At the beginning, I was bit worried about his character. I thought he was just a comic relief characters, but he developed to much more. My biggest reservation about this episode was the relatively slow pace. We now got some episodes, which where quite slow. I think it’s again time for some more action. My reservations aside, I am quite happy with this episode and I can’t wait to next week.
